Lean is a widespread philosophy in industrial circles which these days is increasingly applied within the service sector as well. Lean comprises 5 main principles:
  • Identifying what the client sees as the value-adding elements of the process
  • Identifying the value stream ("Value Stream Mapping")
  • Ensuring value-adding steps flow more effectively ("Flow")
  • Removing all obstacles obstructing smooth flow
  • Generating "Pull". Pulling goods and services throughout the various process steps: the most
    efficient production method.
  • Constant striving towards continuous improvement. Remember: by aiming for perfect processes,
    excellent processes become a realistic outcome ("Continuous Improvement towards Process
    Excellence")
